It was 3:15 a.m. by the time I was back home and in the shower, attempting to wash the club off my body. Despite the hiccup with Luke, the rest of the night had actually been exactly what I needed: me and my girls dancing the night away, twerking and laughing for hours. The only thing left that I wanted was to get a great night’s rest.

I stepped out of the shower and noticed I’d missed a text while I was in the bathroom. It was a message from Luke.

Hey Reagan, it’s Luke. I ran into your homegirl who was with you at the bar, and she gave me your digits. I hope these are actually yours now that I think about it lol. HMB. I’d love to take you out for dinner. Give me a chance to prove you wrong.

I stared at my phone in shock. Of course, Rebecca would give him my number. I couldn’t believe she wouldn’t also give me a heads-up, but maybe that was the result of tequila brain. But now the question lingered about what I would do in response.

To give myself time to think, I finished drying off and getting ready for bed. Because I’d worn my natural curls tonight, I didn’t bother wrapping my hair to make sure it would be straight in the morning. Instead, I pulled my hair into a ponytail and picked up my silk bonnet to put over my head for the night. With that in place, I put on a pair of gym shorts from college and a tank top, and then climbed into bed, staring at that message over and over, trying to assess the best way to control the situation.

Finally clear, I took a deep breath and responded:

Hi Luke, it’s Reagan. Dinner sounds good.

I quickly pressed Send before I could chicken out, put my ringer on silent and placed my phone on the far end of my nightstand...as far away from my bed as I could get it. If I was ever going to get some rest, I needed to forget I sent that message and anything that might come from it.
